It’s been a long time since I’ve seen these events all occurring in one season. Mother Nature is really playing havoc with us this year. I’m amazed at the number of fires that are burning all at one time in one region of the country, while others have encountered tremendous amounts of rain....

For most people, the sight of a storm drain does little more than make them grip their keys just that little bit tighter. Any engineer or contractor assessing a jobsite, however, will have a different train of thought. To them, a storm drain is not a point of no return as much as it is a point of great expense....

THOSE INVOLVED IN ANY ASPECT OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY WILL LIKELY understand the importance of erosion control, but what they might not know as much about is sediment control. There are many different measures one can take to provide effective erosion control, but none of these will ever ensure 100 percent protection from erosion....

If you were watching the news when these breaks occurred, you saw that they wreaked havoc to the surrounding areas. Many streets flooded; in addition, the break in Westwood flooded the basketball arena at UCLA, where they had just recently installed a new wooden floor....

The hurricane that ripped through Hawaii reminded me that we are now in hurricane season. Although we’re used to seeing hurricanes on the East Coast, this one came out of the West and seemed to start the season off with a bang. It made me think again about how powerful these storms can be, and the tremendous damage they can do to lives and property....

In many ways, we are fortunate that, in our chosen profession, we are able to help people when certain disasters occur: the tornadoes in Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Georgia, the flooding in Louisiana, the snows in the northeastern part of the country, the rain in California, and the snow in Colorado....
