Since November, it seems that everyone has been waiting for El Niño to arrive. We’re still waiting. A few weeks ago, the waves in Hawaii rose to 50 feet. They said that was El Niño. By mid-December, Oregon experienced a rain event that dumped three inches of rain in one day....

The hurricane that ripped through Hawaii reminded me that we are now in hurricane season. Although we’re used to seeing hurricanes on the East Coast, this one came out of the West and seemed to start the season off with a bang. It made me think again about how powerful these storms can be, and the tremendous damage they can do to lives and property....

The Maui County Department of Environmental Management and local farmers Vetiver Farms Hawaii LLC are planting more than 1,200 vetiver grass starters at the Lanai Landfill as a way to fight soil erosion on the island. Arizona’s Granite Mountain Recreation Area, closed in June by the “Doce” fire, has recently been reopened to the public. The recreation area, near Prescott, includes the Granite Mountain Wilderness, Granite Basin Lake and trails in the vicinity. A section of hiking trails remains closed at this time....

In many ways, we are fortunate that, in our chosen profession, we are able to help people when certain disasters occur: the tornadoes in Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Georgia, the flooding in Louisiana, the snows in the northeastern part of the country, the rain in California, and the snow in Colorado....
